The Clark SWCD offers a number of Environmental Education Classroom Presentations. These visits are Free of Charge, and are booked on a “first come, first served” basis. Call our office at 328-4600 to reserve a topic and time.

Lower Elementary Presentations (Grades K-3)

Plants and Soils—This half hour, interactive presentation teaches students about the basic needs of plants that are met by our soil. Other topics discussed include “what soil is made of” and “what makes a soil a good soil for plants”. Students will each receive a Soil Activity poster.

An Incredible Journey: A Water Cycle Experience— During this half hour presentation, each of your students will actually become a water droplet, and go on a journey through the water cycle. This trip is chronicled by making a Water Cycle (bead and pipe cleaner) bracelet that they each get to keep.

Water Flows/Soil Goes!—Teaching the concept of erosion can be difficult. This visual, half hour presentation will show your students—right before their eyes—that wind and water can indeed move soil through use of a mini landscape model and cocoa.

Our Famous “Cookie” Presentation—During this “scientific investigation” of their very own cookie “specimen”, your class will discover that all of the ingredients to make a chocolate chip cookie, directly or indirectly, come from the soil. This fun presentation even includes a rubber chicken

Earth Pizza—During this half hour presentation, your students will get to make an “Earth Pizza”. Best done outside, this makes a great introductory activity to decomposition and composting.

Water Hogs/Water Heroes—In this half hour, outdoor, water and sponge activity, your students will learn some simple things they can do to conserve water, and become a Water Hero instead of a Water Hog!

Rock Milkshakes!—Everyone loves milkshakes! During this half hour, active participation activity, your class will make some “Rock Milkshakes”, and learn about weathering and erosion in the process.

Upper Elementary/Middle School Presentations

The following presentations (see descriptions above) can easily be adapted for your 4th through 8th grade classrooms: An Incredible Journey, the “Cookie”, Water Hogs/Water Heroes and Rock Milkshakes!

Enviroscape Model—Through use of a table-top model, your students will learn about water pollution, and simple ways that we can greatly reduce erosion and water contamination. They will get to add pollutants to the landscape and help with the rain storm that follows!

Groundwater Model—Although it truly looks like an ant farm, this model is great for showing groundwater principles! Your class will learn about where their drinking water comes from and ways to prevent contamination of this precious resource.

Links in the Chain—During this active, outdoor activity, your students will each become an organism in an aquatic food chain. They will also learn how both energy and chemical pollutants can be transferred through the chain.

High School Presentations

The following presentations (see descriptions above) can easily be adapted for your High School classroom: Enviroscape Model, Groundwater Model and the “Cookie”.

Sold to the Highest Bidder!—In this classroom exercise, your students will become members of special interest groups (e.g., local government, home builders, landfill company, etc.) who are all bidding on a parcel of land that has come up for auction. In the process, they will learn about Land Use Issues.

Field Trips/Field Days

Each year, Clark Soil & Water will coordinate a limited number of Fall & Spring outdoor education experiences for your class. The topics vary, depending on the your curriculum needs. Some examples of past sessions include:

A half day “Water Field Day” for 2nd grade students, featuring Water games and activities, and a hike to a nearby waterfall.

A half day trip to a local river, for middle school students, to conduct chemical and biological stream quality analysis.

A half day trip to an area Land Lab for Upper Elementary students to experience a variety of environmental topic activities.

We are also glad to design presentations to accommodate your individual curriculum needs!
