SPRINGFIELD, OH (JAN. 5, 2023) — The Clark County Utilities Department will raise rates for its water and sewer districts next year to continue to provide safe drinking water and high quality sewer service for more than 8,000 accounts and 22,000 people in four different counties.
The Board of Clark County Commissioners approved the 2023 rate structure at its meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 4. The three-percent rate increases are caused by rising costs to maintain water and sewer systems, as well as annual pass through increases from water and sewer providers, including the city of Springfield.
Rates were not increased for 11 of 12 water and sewer districts in 2021. Last year, the commission also approved a three-percent rate increase.
“The costs to create clean drinking water and treat wastewater continue to increase,” said Utilities Director Chuck Bauer. "We’re doing our best to keep increases low for our customers, while also maintaining the financial stability of our department."
The Utilities Department is an enterprise that is funded entirely by ratepayers, not public tax dollars. The department maintains more than 88 miles of water mains, 108 miles of sewer lines, three treatment plants, 18 pumping stations and four elevated water tanks.
